The ready-to-eat principle, introduced at the beginning of the 1990s by BUD Holland, requires close and personal cooperation between growers and importers/distributors. Harvesting at the exact right moment, while taking account of the time it takes for the products to be shipped to the Netherlands. Either by plane, boat or road. Into the ripening chamber at the right moment. And on the shelf of the supermarket, greengrocer or service and catering wholesaler, anywhere in Europe at exactly the right time. This requires expertise, from both growers and importers/distributors. They need to be experts in the area of climate control during the ripening and storage period (shelf life).
